Symptoms and Causes of an Infected Tooth

Do you have an infected tooth? It could be caused by a bacterial infection at the tip of the tooth’s root. The fancy term for this is “periapical abscess.” Why does this occur? Well, it could be that you have an untreated cavity, or maybe an injury to the tooth or some prior dental work has broken down and is allowing an infection that could involve swelling and irritation. Think of your tooth as a castle with high walls, and something has breached those walls and has gotten in!

What Happens With an Infected Tooth

Thankfully, a dentist can treat an infected tooth by draining the “pus” that’s bothering the tip of the root. A visit to the dentist can help rid you of the infection. In some cases, a root canal may need to be done. And in some extreme cases, a tooth might need to be pulled.

When you’ve got a cavity in your tooth, or a crack or chip, then bacteria can enter into the innermost part of that tooth. Inflammation and infection typically occur. It can be a painful experience.

What are some signs you have an infected tooth? If you feel a constant throbbing “toothache,” especially with accompanying discomfort around your jawbone, neck or ear, then a tooth might be infected. Chewing and biting might become painful; You might also experience discomfort when eating or drinking something particularly hot or cold. If you’ve got a foul smell or taste in your mouth, swelling in your face (or neck/cheek) and/or tender lymph nodes (under your jaw or in your neck) those are also indicators that something’s wrong. Some people with tooth infections also experience a high fever.
