How to Prevent Gums Disease

When you think about your smile, you think about teeth, right? But don’t forget your gums! Ideally, you want healthy, good-looking gums. You don’t want gum disease. How can you prevent gum disease?

Gum Disease Overview

Well, gum disease happens when plaque builds up under and along the gum line. Plaque is a sticky film that coats teeth and contains bacteria. If it’s not removed when it’s soft, it hardens and becomes difficult to remove. Plaque is filled with bacteria and can cause infections that bother both the gums and associated bones, leading to tooth decay and gum disease. Oh, and bad breath, too.

If and when you’re starting to get gum disease, it’s called “gingivitis.” How might you know if you’ve got this? If your gums are red, tender, swollen/inflamed, and/or prone to bleeding, you could have an issue.

What can you do to prevent gum disease? There are some simple solutions. First, floss. This helps remove plaque. Next, get regular dental cleanings– not just once a decade, but, rather, at least twice a year. Also, if you smoke, quit. These are some basics.

What else can you do? Brush your teeth twice a day, use a fluoride toothpaste, and also use a therapeutic mouthwash such as Listerine. Basically, you want to do your best to get rid of plaque build-up so it’s not even there to bother your gums. Also, don’t brush your teeth too hard, as that can irritate gums. Be gentle but thorough and devote more than 10 seconds to your twice-or-thrice a day habit of brushing your teeth (and gums) so they’re truly clean.
