Don’t Get Tricked: Treat Your Teeth this Halloween

October means pumpkin picking, hayrides, corn mazes, changing of the leaves and Halloween candy-induced cavities. That last one did not sound too fun, now did it? There are ways to enjoy some tasty sweets this Halloween without causing major damage to your teeth. This goes for kids and adults alike. We all enjoy candy, but knowing which treats to avoid, and which treats are OK helps keep your moth happy and healthy. We love and appreciate your business, but the last thing we want to do is deliver the bad news that you’re in need of having cavities filled because of your Halloween candy.

It is important to steer clear of chewy candies such as caramels. Caramel sticks to your teeth for a long time and is difficult to remove. This allows bacteria to feed off of these areas, which eventually leads to tooth decay.

Hard candies that you suck on for a long time, such as jaw breakers, should be avoided too. This long-lasting treat actually ends up creating a sugar bath in your mouth, bathing your teeth to create an ideal breeding ground for cavity-causing bacteria. It is also important to go easy on sour candies. They have a high acidity and can be very corrosive to your teeth, as well.

Now that we have discussed the don’ts, let’s focus on the positive. There are still ways to enjoy sweet treats while staying healthy. Sugar-free lollipops are a great alternative to hard candies. They satisfy the same craving but won’t allow bacteria to grow and thrive in your mouth. Look for sugar-free candies with xylitol, which prevent oral bacteria growth.

Chocolate-covered raisins are also a healthy alternative. Raisins actually have chemical compounds that fight oral bacteria. And speaking of chocolate, dark chocolate is generally a healthier choice and may even offer some limited health benefits. For example, dark chocolate is loaded with antioxidants which can also be found in blueberries.
