Some people don’t know whether or not they grind their teeth when they sleep. That said, you might be doing so, especially if you get chronic headaches and/or jaw pain from clenching and grinding your teeth. If this is the case, perhaps you need a “night guard.” This wearable item that you put over your teeth helps protect them from excessive wear.
What is Bruxism?
The term “bruxism” is the fancy word for grinding/clenching the teeth and/or jaw. Specifically, grinding is when you move your jaw back and forth while clenching involves biting down with force for long periods of time. You might not even realize you do this! But a sleep partner or dentist might notice and tell you.
A person who grinds their teeth while sleeping is probably going to do damage to the structure and enamel of the teeth over time.
Who Needs a Night Guard?
Who is likely to need a night guard? People who are competitive, aggressive, hyperactive or stressed out might experience bruxism. Meanwhile, those who smoke, drink, use certain psychiatric meds, and/or have health conditions like sleep apnea or Parkinson’s are also likely to experience bruxism. It makes sense to talk with a dentist and get their professional opinion as to whether or not you do it!
A night guard can be custom made to fit your teeth (and mouth). The guard(s) look similar to teeth whitening trays. Think of the guard as a shield against excessive wear on your teeth. If and when you do use a night guard, the hope is that you’ll have fewer headaches and/or less jaw pain. The guard will also help protect your teeth, crowns and other dental restorations from breaking, etc.
