An Overview of Dental Crowns

One of the most common restorative treatments we offer is the dental crown, which is a reliable, long-lasting solution that restores both the function and beauty of your teeth.

A dental crown is a protective covering that encases an entire tooth, restoring its original shape, size, and strength. Crowns are typically used when a tooth is too damaged to be repaired with a simple filling or other restorative treatment. By fitting securely over the affected tooth, a crown helps preserve the natural tooth structure and provides durable protection against further damage.

The Benefits of Porcelain Crowns

When it’s time to choose a crown material, we often suggest porcelain because they closely mimic the appearance of natural teeth. Porcelain crowns are highly durable and can last many years with proper care. They are custom-made to match the size, shape, and color of your existing teeth.

When Is a Crown Needed?

Dental crowns are a versatile solution used to address a wide range of restorative and cosmetic dental needs. They are commonly recommended for repairing broken or fractured teeth, enhancing the appearance of teeth, and restoring decayed teeth that are too damaged to be treated with fillings. Additionally, crowns can be used to replace large or fractured fillings and to protect a tooth following a root canal treatment.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Getting a crown usually takes two appointments. During your first visit, precise impressions of your tooth will be taken to create a custom-fit crown. After the tooth is numbed and reshaped to fit the crown properly, a temporary crown will be placed to protect it while your permanent one is made by a dental laboratory.

At your second appointment, the temporary crown is removed and replaced with your permanent one. Your dentist will carefully check the fit, spacing, and bite to ensure the new crown feels comfortable and functions properly. With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, your crown can last for many years.
